Abstract:
This tutorial is compiled from the curriculum of a two-semester course entitled “Foreign Language for Professional Purposes”, which is taught to undergraduates, namely senior students specializing in Economics, Management, Accounting and Audit, and other such specializations.
The authors chose to supplement this skill-building course from the abstracts of authentic textbooks and Internet articles on Economics.
Through this tutorial, the students will increase their level of proficiency in reading, discussion, and doing drills on economy-related texts in English.
The book also offers many different practical tasks meant to help students prepare for the English language IAE (Integrated Admission Examination; required for entrance to Master's Degree programs) and EIE (External Independent Evaluation Test; required for entrance to graduate programs). Student preparedness for the latter is one of the authors' two ultimate goals, alongside with effectively teaching future economists the skills for professional communication.
This 90-hour course (44 hours of workshops and 46 hours of individual work) is comprised of nine units, each dedicated to a special economic issue. Chosen texts brief the students on basic economic problems, and vocabulary drills are aimed to supply them with necessary vocabularies.
IEI/AIE prep drills familiarize students with the exam structure and typical exam tasks, while progress-checking exercises are designed to activate students’ comprehension and speaking skills.
Hopefully, this will be a rewarding and useful book for those teaching and studying specialized English, as well as for those struggling to pass their IAE/IEI in English.
Our “English for Economists” tutorial has been field-tested at Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University, and updated in response to the evaluations kindly given by teachers, students, and EIE experts.
